This naval variant of the American Colonial flag dates to the start of the Revolutionary War and is one of the earliest to feature 13 stripes — symbolizing the original colonies. Its inscription, “DONT TREAD ON ME,” intentionally omits the apostrophe, as seen in the only known period depiction: a Thomas Hart print from August 1776.
The rattlesnake, found only in the American colonies, had already become a symbol of colonial defiance. The Continental Navy adapted this into a maritime emblem, pairing it with the warning that reflects the snake’s lethal defense and message to stay away.
In 2002, the Secretary of the Navy ordered the historic Navy Jack flown on all U.S. Navy ships during the Global War on Terror.
