The Confederate Mississippi Republic Flag was adopted during the early period of the Civil War, serving as a symbol of the state’s secession from the Union. It was one of the earliest flags used by Mississippi following its declaration of independence in January 1861, before the adoption of the more widely recognized Confederate national flags.
This flag held both official and military functions — it was flown on public buildings and carried by Mississippi regiments during the early battles of the war. The design is distinctive for its central Magnolia tree, a nod to Mississippi’s identity as “The Magnolia State.” The blue canton in the top left corner contains a single white star, symbolizing Mississippi as an independent republic. The flag’s red border and fringe completed its formal appearance.
Although it was eventually replaced by other Confederate banners, the Magnolia flag remains a notable historical emblem of Mississippi’s Civil War legacy.
It’s official description was:
“A Flag of white ground, a Magnolia tree in the centre, a blue field in the upper left hand corner with a white star in the centre, the Flag to be finished with a red border and a red fringe at the extremity of the Flag.”
