In the small town of Lynchburg, Texas, Captain William Scott formed a group of passionate volunteers ready to fight for Texas’ independence. Understanding the need for a unifying symbol, Captain Scott, with the help of an Italian immigrant, created a unique flag from a piece of blue silk. This flag wasn’t just a piece of cloth; it was a beacon of hope for his men and for all who dreamed of a free and independent Texas.
Captain Scott’s group of 30 volunteers was part of a larger movement that was growing restless under Mexican rule. Leaders like Sam Houston and Stephen F. Austin worked hard to coordinate these diverse groups, striving to form a united front against the organized Mexican army. Despite their efforts, the call for independence grew louder by the day.
By the end of 1835, attacks by the Mexican navy and the looming threat of an invasion led by Santa Anna catalyzed the Texan resolve. Communities across Texas, from Nacogdoches to Brazoria, held public meetings, each declaring the same resolute demand: complete independence from Mexico. This collective voice led to the historic decision on December 10th by the Council of the Provisional Government to call for an election, setting the stage for the official declaration of the Republic of Texas.
