Thought to have been first sewn by Betsy Ross in 1776 at the request of George Washington, Robert Morris, and Colonel Ross, this historic flag features 13 embroidered stars arranged in a circle, representing the unity of the original Thirteen Colonies during the Revolutionary War.
Though there was no single “official” flagmaker during the war, Betsy Ross—working from her shop in Pennsylvania—created flags for over 50 years. In 1777, she made flags for the Pennsylvania State Navy, and while early records of the circular 13-star design only appear in the 1790s, it has come to symbolize the founding ideals and formative years of the United States.
The legend of Betsy Ross sewing the first American flag was introduced to the public in 1870 by her grandson, William J. Canby, who presented testimony to the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. He recalled:
“It is not tradition, it is a report from the lips of the principal participator in the transaction… Colonel Ross, with Robert Morris and General Washington, called on Mrs. Ross… and wanted her to make a flag from the drawing… redrawn by General Washington in pencil in her back parlor.”
This account places the flag’s origin during Washington’s June 1776 visit to Congress—just before the Declaration of Independence.
